During the first few years of my broadcasting career, my boss gave me a slim, blue pamphlet.
He told me to memorize everything in it, so I wouldn't stumble over Idaho place names when reading the news. I still have it on my desk, with coffee stains all over the back.
Some fun examples of Idaho pronunciation quirks:
Athol (as in bath) - ATH-ul; St. Maries - saint MARYS; Hamer - HAY-mur; Dubois - DOO-boyss; Weippe - WEE-ipe.
Boise is listed as BOY-see. This guide was first printed in 1974.
Finding correct pronunciations in the digital age is pretty easy. However, you don't know what you don't know, so perusing a resource like this is valuable. The Idaho Press Club offers it online, click here.
This was my other go-to for correct pronunciations. I found out about it from a friend who worked at Associated Press in Washington, DC. I ordered it from Waldenbooks (remember that store?) in Boise Towne Square. You can find used copies on Amazon. It's been out of print for a long time.
This guide says Boise is pronounced.......BOI-zee!
