This band surprised us with many instruments. They had drums, electric bass, guitar, melodica, xylophone, violin, mandolin, and...SAW! They mentioned being compared a bit to Talking Heads, you can hear it vocally and he did remind me a bit of Andrew Bird.
This band graced us with performing when they had no local show scheduled! The've been touring out of a van for a year, but we have a feeling things are about to change for One Eskimo. Catch them live St. Patrick's Day on the "Ellen" show!
Michael Franti is a peaceful warrior. He takes his love from city to city, barefoot. He took his shoes off at the airport one day, and decided that felt like freedom. He has rarely worn shoes ever since!
When the band Harper Blynn set up for Greg Laswell, I spoke with Pete Harper during soundcheck. He said our conference room reminded him of the cheesy record store showcases they do. "Showcase?" I thought. If this band is already signed, why are they still doing showcases for the guys in suits? I asked him what those are like. He said it's a conference room of about 20 people, they have to play 1-3 songs and just leave the room. Any interaction with the record label people is bizarre. They are label VIP's, A&R people, and they are NOT allowed to show emotion or interact with the band and tell them how they did in any way.
Michael Franti and stopped in an hour early for their performance, an all-time first for our in-studios. It was a nice change, we all scrambled to set up the room while they settled in. Jolene was quiet, not sure that she was terribly excited to be there. She's pretty cool, listen to her solo music! "Does she have a thing goin' on with THAT guy?" A co-worker from KHITS asks me. We're not sure, but all agree that it looks like it, see how she looks at him in these videos?
The group was wonderful, stage manager guy...a little troublesome. He said they would NOT play if they had any less than 12 inputs, that they were used to working with over 58. Rolling eyes, we scrambled and shuffled, Rocky made it happen with my favorite thing ever, the "sub-mix."
