It really takes a village to do live River sessions. We have quality equipment, mics, and all the cords and D.I.’s need to make even the most complex sessions happen. Sometimes it’s as simple as a vocalist with a guitar. Other times, we have a double session where a 5-piece band shows up 20 minutes after we had a group of listeners in to see ZZ Ward.
Such is the case with Grizfolk The photo above shows the scene before all of the cozy rock lights come on and we start rolling. Band members, tour managers, techs and I, are all backstage communicating needs and inputs. Our “acoustic” shows are sometimes modified with guitar amps, pedals, and laptops these days.
I love how different each band is. ZZ Ward spoke quietly about watching a movie all by herself last week at a theater in Moscow, Idaho. Then she sings…Something happens to transform her voice into a locomotive you didn’t see coming! Her pipes have me turning 3 master volumes down just on the cusp of overload, but she is professional and knows just how far to take it. It’s impressive.
Grizfolk is a group we’ve seen before, at the fine acoustics of The Egyptian Theater. They opened for Brett Dennen, and have also toured with Bastille. They have great songs, and stellar harmonies. "From the Spark," is their latest EP.
