Roxx's Session Chatter

Mindy Smith

She visited us many years ago, and it was so exciting to hear of Mindy Smith's return to Boise. It is even better news to know she would perform at Boise Contemporary Theater, a perfect venue for her voice.

Can I just say, I love that so many groups stop by with a cajon as their percussion instrument? These magical instruments get better and smaller all the time. We've found this "sweet spot" for them in this room, near the corner. The sound bounces off the wall and back into the mic in front, and you can tell this drummer barely has to hit his hands to get a nice big sound!

They came to us right off the road from a stay in Baker City, Oregon. Before the session, she tells me, "If you hear a low rumbling noise, that's just my stomach!" She had some veggie Port of Subs sammies waiting for her when she was done.

Mindy spoke of producing her new self-titled album, her 5th release to date. She says sometimes great things come out of the "scratch" vocals, and she insists you must get the help of a co-producer, to hear what really works. After the session, I recorded some station I.D.'s from Mindy, and asked if she planned on singing my favorite of hers, "Raggedy Ann." She assured me it's on her setlist.

Mindy has done some great collaborations and covers with Dolly Parton, and a holiday track with Alison Krauss.

She shared with us, "It's unsettling to play new stuff when you have a new record." She likes to group new songs with familiar ones, for her own comfort. We'll soon feature songs from new new album. Mindy is multi-talented and painted the backdrop on the cover. This is her brand new single :
