Decemberists Sound Check Party
The River hosted a Decemberists sound check party at the Idaho Botanical Garden. It was a hot afternoon, but everyone was patient. Eventually, we were lead past the noisy beer truck to the sweet sounds of the stage. Singer Colin Meloy joked when they made a couple of mistakes, "Oh yeah, THIS is what you're here for!"
They played parts of a few tunes, switched out a few instruments, and fine-tuned their stage sound.
It was such a pleasure to see Sara Watkins, of Nickelcreek! She played violin, guitar, harmonica, xylophone, keyboards, and a drum she added accents with. It is great to see her branch out in styles. During the show to kill time, the band improvised a bit of "You Are My Sunshine," and Sarah even sang the second verse and gave a nice fiddle lead.
Sarah fills in for keyboardist Jenny Conlee, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in May. Colin Meloy mentioned that she is taking some time off to heal.
Typhoon opened the show, a huge band with great music and many styles. When The Decemberists were on, the early evening remained very hot and they joked that Sara was the only one wearing proper clothes. Some of the guys had long-sleeved shirts and vests. In time, they asked the audience for hats. Colin wore a woman's floppy hat for a while and then gave it to the drummer. Colin then chose a more stylish hat that he insisted somehow made him look exactly like Lindsay Buckingham. Eventually the bass player borrowed some sunglasses, and with each song they kept hoping for a break from the harsh sun.
Thanks again to Rocks Water for keeping everyone hydrated, for free.
Here's a clip below from their sound check party. Counting the days now until Brandi Carlile, Tim hinted she may come in to guest DJ with us!
